a type of hors d’œuvre (“outside the (main) work”), a small, prepared and usually decorative food, consisting of a small piece of bread (sometimes toasted) or puff pastry or a cracker topped with some savoury food, held in the fingers and often eaten in one bite.
A la carte = "according to the menu”. The phrase is used in reference to a menu of items priced and ordered separately.
Table d'hôte = a menu with limited or no choice of items served at a fixed price.
A restaurant has usually a different menu for BREAKFAST, LUNCH and DINNER.
